Callaway Gardens- First Day of Spring

We kicked off the first day of Spring by driving up to Callaway Gardens this weekend. We spend a lot of Sundays driving through the gardens...It's a great place to work on our photography. We have probably been 10 times in the past few months whether it was to see the fall color, their famous Fantasy In Lights, or the Christmas snow fall. We purchased a yearly pass this weekend and judging by the number of visits we've made in the past, the pass will more than pay for itself after a few visits. Plus, annual pass holders receive discounts on different events and lodging. Callaway has fun events all year- in fact, this coming weekend they're have a plant fair and a wine and dine event that should be a lot of fun.

There are so many different things to do at Callaway Gardens- fly fishing, photography workshops, bike trails, water sports in the summer, you rent a cabin, stay in the lodge, go on wildlife hikes, or visit one of the many educational centers they have. My favorite is the Sibley Agriculture Center.

There is a large green house with a waterfall, a koi pond, and a big beautifully landscaped garden. I probably took 50 pictures of the tulips. I just couldn't get enough! The cherry trees were in full fluffy bloom and I could have sat out by the fragrant olive all. day. long. If you've never smelled one, you're missing out!

Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden is also a really neat area.

It's 7.5acres of fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, flowers, shady places to sit under muscadine vines, composting areas, etc. You can't pick anything there because they use a lot of it in Callaway's restaurants but it's a really neat area to explore. There wasn't much growing right now other than flowers.

Every time we visit Callaway we find something else to do. There is still a lot of the the grounds that are only accessible by bicycle so that will be our next adventure. One of the ladies at the Discovery Center told us that the azaleas would be in full bloom in the next 10 days or so.

After you've spent the day exploring, stop over at the Callaway Country Kitchen! I'm a big fan of their chicken and dumplings!

  2. These pictures are absolutely gorgeous! Living on the CT coast this time of year is very dreary and there is not a flower in sight. Seeing all this makes me want to move south!

  3. I really need to get my butt down there. And, your photography is looking amazing! I need to work on mine. I've been photographing a lot of food for the maybe-it-will-happen-one-day paleo blog ;) but not much else (and frankly, I do not have the right lens or lighting in my kitchen). Maybe we can meet down there one weekend!

  4. P.S. Y'all should consider checking out Serenbe some time. It's really neat just for a brunch and exploring or a weekend at the B&B.
